Another Pre-Departure Post

Three weeks exactly until departure and I still don't know what classes I'm taking. I can't purchase my books, I have no idea about who my roommates are, little idea about what the school is supplying me with in terms of furnishings, etc. and only two days ago found out that yes, I do have a room waiting for me at UKent. The process of putting this trip into action has been somewhat ridiculous, with flurries of e-mails coming every three weeks with absolutely no word from anyone from either of my schools in between - quite frustrating.

I shouldn't bitch, really - I'm still going to England after all - but after basically leaving everything I know in life in committing to this trip, I'd like to keep the suspense to a minimum and just make it there already. I've had enough bureaucracy to worry about with securing a passport and visa earlier this summer, I'd like to finally have some peace of mind in this whole process.

One final backhanded complaint: if any of you (assuming someone is reading this) can go from http://www.kent.ac.uk/ to www.kent.ac.uk/student by only following links, I will send $5 to your PayPal account. I've been using the site for about six months now and haven't been able to make this happen. How a credible institution can maintain such a poor website is beyond me.

Finally, in making sure I don't turn this entry into something one might find in a 15 year old's LiveJournal, here are two videos I found recently, one Canterbury related and one...not quite so.

...I tried to embed the videos into the blog but I'm new at this and can't figure it out, so I'll have to go low tech and just post the links...

#1

Though really it's #2, but I'm new at this whole blog thing and accidentally deleted my actual first post.

So let's try again.

At this point, it seems like everyone I know is packing up and heading back to college. Makes me kind of sad I won't be leaving for Vermont this weekend to spend the year, but it's hard to be too down when I'm gearing up for a year at my school away from school.

For those who aren't aware (although if you're reading this, I can't imagine who you would be that you haven't already heard enough about it from me), I'm spending from September '07 until June '08 here:

Not at this building specifically, but at the University of Kent at Canterbury, located in SE England, about 45 minutes by train from London. The massive cathedral to the left is Canterbury Cathedral, 900 years old and the HQ of the Anglican Church - also far and away the biggest building in the Burlington-sized town.

I originally decided to make a blog for my parents. If you know Julie and Big Steve then it will come as little surprise to you that they want to know every minute detail about my time in England, so I figured this would be a fun and nicely contemporary way to keep them updated...and you too, if you feel so inclined to check in.

I still have a ton to do in regards to finalizing my position as a student at UKC, but I'll let you know of my harrowing tales in that regard tomorrow. Now for bed and another day working for what amounts to about £4 per hour at Frontier Field, trying to save for my big year abroad.

(if you know a better way to type a £ than googling "pound symbol" then copying and pasting, I'd love to hear it)
